Originally launched in 1775 as the merchant vessel Katy in Providence, Rhode Island, this ship was purchased by the Rhode Island government and converted into a warship for the Continental Navy. Commissioned under the command of Captain John Hazard and later the famed John Paul Jones, the USS Providence was armed with twelve 4-pounder guns, 14 railside swivel guns and carried a crew of 6 officers, 22 seamen, 26 Marines. During the American War of Independence, it distinguished itself in numerous engagements, including the capture of British supply ships and the daring raid on Nassau in 1776, where it helped secure vital munitions for the American cause.

Historically, the Providence was a sloop-of-war, measuring roughly 65 feet (19.8 meters) in length and 20 feet (6.1 meters) in beam, with a displacement of about 110 tons. Designed for speed and maneuverability, it was a quintessential light warship of its era.
