You continue your gentle ascent until you reach a ridge, at which point Jillian slows her horse and motions for the rest of you to do the same. Right at this lip where the terrain crests and then dips down again, it opens up into an enormous bowl shape – the sides steep at first but leveling out quickly with surprising symmetry as if someone took a large spoon and scooped out a portion of the rock.

A perplexed look washes over Jillian’s face as she peers into the bowl where an incredibly lush thicket is growing wild and free. The vivid, moist greens look like they’ve been transplanted from a jungle or rainforest – decidedly out of place for an otherwise dry mountain atmosphere. Despite their size, many of the trees have a rubbery, sapling-like appearance as if not yet fully formed… flora that is somehow simultaneously old and young.
