For the GM: This encounter can be used at any level, simply adjust CR for whatever Tier play you want.

Story Hooks: Ruins of D’elan Wisenthall is a well known ruined temple inhabited by a powerful Drow necro mage, or Lich is you prefer. It is situated in the Du Varten forest, in the middle of Du Varten Lake.

Encounter details: The first building is an overgrown, ruined temple with a statue of whatever god you want. The altar has a skeleton with armor on it, plus a morningstar/mace and sword, both common. The alter istelf radiates an evil aura and anyone within 5 feet of the altar suffers disadvantage on both attacks and saving throws unless of evil alignment. This building is where the first fight would happen, or maybe as an ambush by the fallen tree trunk as the players traverse the path up from the shore. Goblins or Orcs can serve as the necro mage’s minions. Once past that building, players can go around the cliff to the camp and graveyard. That camp will have at least two higher level NPCs. The graveyard has a chest with treasure and a trap in front. Continuing towards the two story tower, you can add traps if you want on the door. Once inside, the first floor has many books and scrolls, but nothing the party can use. On the second floor is the Mage’s Orb in the middle of the room. Players can interact with anything in the room except the Orb. If the Org is interacted with, it sends an immediate recall to the necro mage and he ports in. In the room are a +1 dagger and whatever magic book/spells you want to give on the altar. The desk with the ink and quill has a contract between the mage and ‘Shandara’, a powerful, undead Dragon. If grabbed, this contract can be used to manipulate the necro mage. Also on that desk is a Scroll of ‘Whatever you want’. Opposite of the desk with ink and quill is a table with all types of treasure. Determine GP for players, potions and such. If necro mage is manipulated, he gives you a small orb with a rune that opens the Dragon Doors behind the tower on the cliff face. If the necro mage is defeated, players get the small orb, plus the dagger and magic book. The encouner ends when players enter the Dragon doors to confront the undead Dragon (another encounter).
